Adventures in Wellness, Episode 5: What Is A Workout?

I was cleaning up today and found something I hadn't seen in years: a paper with—not a poem, exactly—on it that was given to me by my PE teacher in middle school. I remember he had done this with every class; he passes out this paper and each week the students had to memorize and recite a section of it, until they could recite the whole piece. Some find it cheesy, some find it inspiring. Like many things, I think its value is directly proportional to how seriously you take it. I, for one, am going to memorize it again, because I get past the cheesiness pretty easily and I believe every word of this thing. Heck, I might even record myself reciting it and add it to my iPod to listen to while I work out. Anyway, here it is:

What Is A Workout?
by George Allen

A workout is 25% perspiration and 75% determination. Stated another way, it is one part physical exertion and three parts self-discipline. Doing it is easy once you get started.

A workout makes you better today than you were yesterday; it strengthens the body, relaxes the mind and toughens the spirit. When you work out regularly, your problems diminish and your confidence grows.

A workout is a personal triumph over laziness and procrastination. It is the badge of a winner—the mark of an organized, goal-oriented person who has taken charge of his or her destiny.

A workout is a wise use of time and an investment in excellence. It is a way of preparing for life's challenges and proving to yourself that you have what it takes to do what is necessary.

A workout is a key that helps unlock the door to opportunity and success. Hidden within each of us is an extraordinary force. Physical and mental fitness are the triggers that can release it.

A workout is a form of rebirth. When you finish a good workout you don't simply feel better, you feel better about yourself.

Haha, it was cool how much I didn't have to look at the paper to type that up. ;-)

Ok, here's the deal: If you decide to memorize this, and it inspires you or helps you in your journey to optimal health, come in for a massage. Recite this to me and tell me your story. I'll add an extra half hour to your massage for free. :-)
